These people see their nonprofits being in competition with every other nonprofit – and they are absolutely right.  However, the qualities they bring to the contest can often be disruptive and ugly.  If you do not acknowledge this, you will lose donor dollars, volunteer commitments, membership, and patronage.

This article will describe the competitive environment in which nonprofits uncharacteristically find themselves.  A subsequent article will deal with the strategies you need to consider in order to meet this challenge. 

Where is the competition?  It is coming at you from all directions:

* Geographic – Look at the other nonprofits in your town.  Are some of you competing for the same resources?  The problem is that if a donor decides, for example, to set up a charitable trust in favor of the hospital, it is unlikely they will consider a similar commitment to you.  If the local library sponsors a town fair for their benefit, it means that you should not expect great success duplicating the experience.  If a national charity prevails in a time of particular need, be it a tsunami or Katrina, people will channel their beneficence to them rather than you. 

* Category – If you are a museum, you are in competition with other museums.  For example, if you are a local historical society, your constituency may reduce their aid to you if they spend a weekend in Washington, DC at the Smithsonian.  You are also in competition for support from your County Museum, State Museum, etc.

* Perception – As other nonprofits promote themselves in newspapers, magazines, newsletters, tv, and radio, you will find their name recognition increasing at your expense.  Nonprofits need to recognize the importance of promoting their brand.

* Economic – If other nonprofits can outspend you on technology, lure talent with higher salaries, extend their markets by advertising and public relations, and spend money on consultants, they are positioning themselves to enjoy the dividends of these investments.

Well, not to worry. The basics are very easy and once you familiarize yourself with just a few simple steps, you'll be rockin' and rollin' in no time! Following are the top five top technical questions that most Windows 'newbies' (wink, wink) are seeking help with and guidance for each.

Find and Open A Program

Every window-based operating system works in the same basic way. Once you've turned on your computer, you will see a 'Start' button in the bottom left corner of your monitor screen (you'll see the 'Windows' icon to the left of the word 'start'). Using your mouse, left click on that start button and a pop-up window will appear. At the bottom of that pop-up window, on the left, you will see the word 'Programs'. Without clicking your mouse, slide down to 'Programs' and then left-click once. All of the programs installed on your PC will appear in that new window. Slide your mouse over whichever program you want to open and left-click your mouse once. That will launch the program for you!

Close, Minimize or Maximize a Window

Closing a window is probably one of the easiest things you'll ever do. Once you've launched a program and the window is open, look to the top, right of your program window and you will see a red box with a white 'x' inside it. Left click that red box and your program will close. If you have a file open within the window that you haven't saved yet, the program will prompt you and ask whether or not you want to save your file.

To the left of that little red box, you will also see two more boxes; one will have an empty square inside it and the other contains a 'dash' at the bottom. These are your maximize and minimize options. The minimize button allows you to keep the program open but get it out of the way, which is particularly helpful if you have more than one program open at the same time. Just left click once on the 'dash' button and your program will minimize itself to the bottom of your monitor screen. To restore the program back up into your view, click the window at the bottom of your screen that has the file name your were working on inside it.

To increase your viewing area, you may want to 'maximize' a window. Clicking on the button directly to the left of the 'close' button will maximize your program window to the full dimensions of your monitor screen. Clicking it again will restore it back to its initial size.

Saving Files Your PC

Say you've created a document in Word. There are two ways to save your file and these techniques are also the same basic methods used for just about every program ever created.

1) There is a little icon (picture) of a diskette in the toolbar at the top of every document window. Left-clicking on that diskette will automatically save your documents. This is a good way to go if you've already saved your file into a desired folder on your computer and want to also 'save as you go' so you don't lose any of your content if the program were to freeze or your system were to crash.

2) At the top of every document window is a toolbar with the word 'File' on the very left end. Left-click on 'File' and an options window will appear. Slide your mouse down to 'Save' and left-click once. A new window titled 'Save As' will open. At the bottom of the 'Save As' window will be a white box with the words 'File Name' to the left. Type in the name of your document, click the 'Save' button to the right of that title window and you're done.

NOTE: If you want to save your files into the 'My Documents' folder that comes equipped with every Windows system, click on the 'My Documents' icon in the left of the 'Save As' window before entering the name of your file.

Don't be afraid to click on your toolbar buttons or pull-down menus to learn about each of their uses (you'll want to make sure you save your file first though). Trial and error is one of the best ways to learn so go for it!

The telephone is one of the most important inventions of the past two hundred years. The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell.

Born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1847, Alexander Graham Bell immigrated to Canada with his father in 1870 before moving to the United States a year later and becoming a U.S. citizen in 1882. As a young man, Bell studied at the University of Edinburgh, graduated from the University of Toronto and went on to teach vocal physiology at the University of Boston. Bell also tutored private students, including Helen Keller. Both Bell's mother and wife were deaf, a fact that greatly influenced his life's work. It was his focus on speech, hearing and amplification that led Bell to his invention of the telephone.

As a young child, Bell was a curious boy and an avid inventor. At the age of 12, he invented a paddle device that made the task of dehusking wheat simple and efficient. As he grew older, Alexander became fascinated with speech, elocution and hearing. His father, grandfather and uncle were all involved in the study of speech and elocution which, along with a fascination with his mother's deafness, drew him into the field.

Bell started by experimenting with tuning forks, making vowel sounds by mechanical means. From there, he sought to develop a method of creating consonant sounds by those same mechanical means. Bell became fascinated with a method that would translate the human voice into vibrations, vibrations that could be read and transmitted by a machine like the telephone.

In 1875, Bell pushed his work by enlisting Thomas Watson, an electrician, to work with him on his burgeoning invention. Using tuned metal reeds, wire and magnets the two men were able to synchronize a sending telephone with a receiver and reproduce sound. On March 10, 1876, Bell transmitted the first sentence "Watson, come here; I want you" via telephone. The marvelous invention was publicly showcased two months later at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in Boston.

Despite an original contest over the patent application, Bell finally secured it and Alexander Graham Bell's patent for the electric speaking telephone remains today as the single most valuable patent ever issued. In just a few short years, telephones were appearing all over the world and the original Bell Company, founded in 1877, was, thanks to partnerships with Western Union, one of the richest corporations in America.

In his later life, Bell retired to his beloved retreat Beinn Breagh, a home set amongst the pristine beauty of the Bras d'Or Lakes in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. Bell continued to invent, working with hydrofoil, aviation and aeronautics. Bell became fascinated with flight and would go on to invent the first hydroplane as well as a number of kites and aeronautical control devices. An avid scientist and supporter of the quest for knowledge, Bell would also found Science magazine and become a founding member and president of the National Geographic Society.

Alexander Graham Bell died in Baddeck, Nova Scotia in August of 1922. He was 75.
